How you helpAmong Michigan’s Native communities, especially those located in rural areas of the state, the percentage of individuals living below the poverty level is generally much higher than the state overall. Poverty and scarce legal resources contribute to a significantly greater need for effective legal counsel and you can be a part of the solution by volunteering as a pro bono attorney with MILS.
About usMILS is a specialized law office that serves the unique legal needs of the members of the native communities in Michigan to: 1) protect families and cultural practices, 2) secure fundamental rights and access to basic needs, and 3) challenge policies and practices that are harmful to our clients and client communities. MILS envisions a time when all Native Americans and community members have ready access to legal services to meet their basic needs and where everyone can enjoy their rights and be treated fairly in their pursuit of justice.
